Based in Latvia, NEAMO is making offshore fish farming safer, smarter and more sustainable.
Co-founded by Aija Monika Vainiņa and Daniels Gorovojs, the start-up is building an autonomous surveillance vessel (ASV) that helps aquaculture operators monitor risk, predict environmental events, and respond faster.
Their mission: to reduce common challenges like algae blooms, fish escapes, and infrastructure damage—risks that are hard to detect and costly to fix.
NEAMO joined the EIT Jumpstarter 2024 programme in the Food category, where they shifted focus from pure research to real-world business.
“It was incredibly valuable to focus on the business side and receive feedback from mentors and experts,” says Vainiņa. “Jumpstarter helped us define our model, understand our market, and see how to grow.”
Thanks to the programme, the team:
NEAMO’s compact, solar-powered ASV uses:
This combination enables real-time risk monitoring and predictive alerts, including:
The vessel operates autonomously, reducing the need for frequent on-site visits and improving efficiency in remote marine environments.
During the programme, NEAMO:
“Testing our prototype in the field, without knowing whether the sensors would hold or fail, was nerve-racking,” says Vainiņa. “But those moments gave us insights we couldn’t get in the lab.”
Daniels Gorovojs adds, “This experience showed us the value of strong partnerships and relentless testing. Every challenge pushed us closer to a solution the industry can trust.”
The team is now focused on:
NEAMO proves that with the right support, science can turn into a real business with global potential.
